LA Times / Caine & Weber scam

One day a high school student came to my door while my husband and I were sitting out front drinking a Sunday evening beer - he was selling LA Time subscriptions that somehow would help him qualify for a scholarship. That part was a bit fuzzy. I felt bad for him, and it wasn't much money, so I signed up despite the fact that I have no desire to receive any newspapers.

At some point the subscription ran out - which I was happy about. After the papers stopped coming, I received a notice from a collection agency, Caine & Weiner for $18.16 - using words like "judgement" and "credit report" in all caps. If you also received a notice like this, I would just like to let you know that no - you arn't crazy - this is a scam on a large scale. Check one in the "had" column.
